(Australia-NewsWire.Com, November 11, 2012 ) Qld, Australia- Giving a house a makeover can be as simple as a new coat of paint.
Shelly Fletcher’s Victorian cottage has been with her family since her grandmother made it home about 100 years ago. The house has history, but Fletcher said she felt its decor had become dated.
“I felt like I was becoming my grandmother,” Fletcher told the Sacramento Bee, “but I wanted to move my 19th-century house into the 21st century.”
She was able to give the house a modern makeover and keep its Victorian character, with an interior designer’s help.
Designer Pam Steinberger said paint was the key.
“Paint can be the least-expensive way to update your home, but the labor and time it takes to paint aren’t cheap,” Steinberger said. “It pays to choose the right colors before you start.”
One of the right colors for Fletcher was Polaris, a soft blue that is among the tones that create calm, while brighter colors usually indicate more energy.
Paint companies are making the selection process easier for customers. Erika Woelfel has designed color combinations for Behr paint that are featured on the manufacturer’s website. One of her creations is a “beachy” palette that blends blues, beige and gray.
“The approach to ‘life at the beach’ is easy comfort,” Woelfel told the Bee. “As you can imagine, colors are inspired by views of the sea, dunes, beach and sky.”
Steinberger says her company offers in-home consultations. This year, she has done 40.
“It costs $75, but you get $50 back in free paint,” she said.
Steinberger helped Fletcher pick out the right colors and accents for her remodeling job.
“We pulled out more shades of blue in the kitchen and coral in the bedroom,” Fletcher said. “It really clicked.”
The blue, yellow and taupe colors will go with anything, Steinberger pointed out.
“The great part about this color scheme is they’re all neutrals,” she said.
