(Australia-NewsWire.Com, November 11, 2012 ) Victoria, Australia- The American College of Sports Medicine notes that a leading trend of fitness requires no more than one’s own body weight.
ACSM asked over 3,000 individuals from all walks of life to answer an online survey regarding what people were drawn toward when it came to working out. The survey was comprised of 37 potential options and the experts rated the top 20 in order to gauge overall interest.
The upcoming year’s fitness trends seem to be geared toward new ways to sweat, as well as a few classic standbys.
Bodyweight training, in which one uses little more than his/her own bodyweight as resistance for strength and muscle endurance, was near the top of the list for the first time. The previous darlings of the new workout trends, spinning and Pilates fell out of favor with those surveyed.
“It’s true that things that are old are new again, and it is really nice to see that,” says Dick Cotton, ACSM’s national director of certification. “[Older trends] are coming back, and some are coming back and safer.”
Body weight training currently stands at third behind certified fitness professionals and strength training. The most commonly utilized type of bodyweight training are pushups, crunches, and squats, which require no equipment. There are, of course, brands that have attempted to modify each of the workouts to require equipment. But it appears individuals enjoy the ability to avoid needless potential junk when seeking a sweat.
“We used to have only two variations of a push-up. The standard, straight body push-up as well as what was called ‘girls’ pushups.’” says Cotton. “Now, we have an extreme variety of no-cost exercises that work. Look at the heights of different common things out in the world like a table, a chair, the ground, a tree, the kitchen counter. Years ago those were not even considered during training. In fact, the ‘girls’ push-up’ has largely gone away because you can do more effective pushups with less resistance from a table top instead of going from your knees.”
Avoiding the cost of equipment is clearly a plus to those who look to get into shape, and is likely a sign of a recession-conscious public.
