(Australia-NewsWire.Com, November 14, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Employees and members of the community showed their support for the fight against breast cancer on Monday at Via Christi Hospital.
Fort Scott Community College’s School of Cosmetology students and volunteers from Mount Carmel Foundation teamed up to raise money for the Cancer Center Fund. They sold $5 pink hair extensions and varieties of breast cancer awareness T-shirts. The even was in conjunction with Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The money from the fund is used to assist patients in need in various manners, including gas cards for patients who must travel long distances to reach centers, supplying nutritional drinks to patients who have trouble holding down food during chemotherapy, and assisting in payments of prescription drugs for the least fortunate. According the Mount Carmel Foundation Executive Director Duane Dreiling, the fund currently has less than $1,000.
“We see a great need for the fund to continue to be used, and anything we can get is greatly appreciated,” Dreiling said, adding that anyone can donate to the fund, even if they don’t want to purchase a shirt or extensions. “Even if you just want to make a contribution, that’s greatly appreciated, too.”
The hospital will hosted a similar fundraising event for the community at Ron’s supermarket mid October.
Breast cancer is the second most common form of cancer among women in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates that 2.5 million breast cancer survivors are living in the U.S.
Breast cancer is also the second most deadly cancer for women, behind lung cancer. Dreiling stated that donations are important, but the goal of the event is to help make the disease and its causes and prevention tactics more widely known.
That’s why the FSCC School of Cosmetology has partnered with Via Christi for past few years, said student Shelley Koger.
“It’s important to show our support,” Koger said. “I do it, personally, because my mom passed away from breast cancer.”
