(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 24, 2013 ) Burleigh Heads, Australia -- In the next 18 months, six new models of electric cars will join the already 11 models availables on Long Island, partly due to the fact more public re-charging stations have been available and heightened popularity among residents.
In New York in the past year, electric car ownership has increased 400 percent to almost 4,000. While thatÂ’s still a tiny percentage of more than 9 million of all types in the state, the count is expected to keep growing as more public charging stations and different models become available. According to the Department of Motor Vehicles, the count excludes golf cart-like vehicles that hybrid gas and electric cars as the Toyota Prius that donÂ’t need plugged in to charge.
On Long Island last year, there were only 1,008 electric and plug-in cars registered. Public officials and environmentalists encourage these electric cars and see them as a way to cut air pollution and dependence on foreign oil. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, an avid electric car proponent, would like to see the number of plug-in cars to increase to 40,000 in the next five years, and plans to spend up to $50 million on charging stations throughout Long Island and the state.
