(Australia-NewsWire.Com, November 11, 2012 ) Victoria, Australia- Australia has positioned itself as a model eco friendly example in its potential to generate more than 500 times its electrical consumption by means of renewable energy resources.
The Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) identified 43 regions across the National Electricity Market (NEM) and the available renewable resources within each area. The study comes at the request of the Commonwealth Government to model 100% renewable electricity generation by 2030 and 2050.
The AEMO stated the energy generation potential is massive. The NEM could have the potential of producing 500 times that of the current 200 terawatt hours of yearly energy. The study excludes national park lands and areas with conflicting use. The latest AEMO energy update suggest available sources of renewable energy covers eastern and south eastern Australia.
Previous research has shown that Australia would be able to generate enough electricity if only by installing solar paneling on all applicable rooftops in the nation, in addition to adequate energy storage facilities.
AEMO’s Chief Operating Officer Mike Cleary stated, “This work will provide industry and governments with a comprehensive resource that can be used to develop and introduce new technologies to the national electricity market over the coming years.”
Two scenarios were used for the AEMO model. The first is based on a rapid transformation of the electricity sector, balanced economic growth, and increased electricity demands with strong side participation. The second scenario depends on a moderate energy sector transformation and moderate side participation with flourishing economic and energy growth.
The AEMO manages the national electricity and gas markets, previously the responsibility of the National Electricity Market Management Company (NEMMCO).
An AEMO draft report is scheduled for release in March 2013 by The Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency (DCCEE).
