(Australia-NewsWire.Com, November 11, 2012 ) Melbourne, Australia- While the new Rugby League’s new logo is cause for some tongue-in-cheek celebration, there are still plenty of real logistical problems that plague the organization.
There are still issues such as salary cap logistics and the club grant, neither of which is an easy fix. In fact, there is a good chance that even if efforts were put forth quickly, that there would be any real change for another half decade.
The radio and new media rights that must be parsed out, but at least according to reports they are being worked on. There on player issues such as the shoulder charge and State of Origin eligibility that must be dealt with in short order as well.
The league is without a new chief executive as well. The league has been without a captain at the helm for five months.
There and many other issues, large and small, which continue to plague the league. At least it has a logo, which became increasingly clear as the ARL Commission unveiled a five-year strategic plan.
The presentation, full of pizazz, was given by Chairman John Grant and Interim Chief Executive Shane Mattiske. The targets set by were lofty. The organization wants to make sure the game sees leaps in membership and attendance. Their aim is to reach 400,000 club members by the year 2017 and to increase average attendance to around 20,000 per match.
The current administration is looking to better than double its overall revenue, which would put it at $300 million. Junior development is being united like no other time in the sports history. Grant spoke about setting aside $200 million to point toward the growth fund for special projects.
There is also a new code of conduct, which will be promoted by the league for both on- and off-field behavior. Grant drew a clear line in the sand for player behavior. The move was considered a welcome one on the heels of Canterbury players’ actions after the grand finale.
The presentation still felt logo-heavy to some, as there was a five-minute video on that aspect alone.
Players are more interested in about whether or not some of the new revenues will be displayed in their paychecks. Clubs are not likely to dole out big paydays if they cannot know how much they are able to pay their superstars.
Both Grant and Mattiske preach patience, but there has to be a limit to the amount of time used stalling.
The organization and sport as a whole needs to have some big decisions made on big issues. But at least we all know where they stand on the logo.
