(Australia-NewsWire.Com, November 15, 2012 ) Victoria, Australia -- In what can be described as a WoW-Genocide, World of Warcraft cities have been hacked and all the characters within the ‘major cities’ of the game have been massacred.
Hackers have apparently created a characters capable of destroying players’ characters as well as those controlled by the game.
Blizzard’s Activision game creator have appealed for information regarding the issue, but was quick to add “The exploit has been hotfixed, so it should not be repeatable.”
There are currently more than 10 million subscribers playing World of Warcraft. That total is comprised of at least 4 million within China alone.
The totals regarding players have dipped slightly since the 2010 peak, but a release in September helped the company see a swell of interest return.
On an online forum, Blizzard stated that it was taking the hacking and comprise of its world’s ruleset “very seriously”.
"Earlier today, certain realms were affected by an in-game exploit, resulting in the deaths of player characters and non-player characters in some of the major cities," wrote a representative going by the name of Nethaera, on Sunday.
Contributing editor of Wow Insider, Olivia Grace, called the action “a significant hack. They discovered a method of the roll of level-one character, which ran to major cities. We don't know exactly what they did, but somehow they were able to kill every single player's character in that city and every single computer controlled character - and they were doing this repeatedly."
Grace stated that she believe the hackers were the very same that attacked WoW in the past.
The hack is reminiscent of the South Park WoW episode, wherein a player walked around killing all the players in the server. In the show, the concern was that people would stop playing the game and participating in the world, since nobody could enjoy quests with a participant interrupting play. That storyline seems to have been followed by the hackers.
