(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 09, 2013 ) Sydney, Australia -- According to a recent article on news.com.au titled For the first time Australians buy as many utes and SUVs as cars, Australians are now buying SUVs and utes in record number. This prompts a response from car loan company Finance Funding AustraliaÂ’s CEO, Justine Milankovic.
“There is a kind of dichotomy where people are moving more towards smaller, more fuel efficient cars, yet some are also more interested in utes and SUVs. I think there are two trends concurrently occurring: one is the preference for smaller cars, and the other is the preference for cars that fit more adventurous lifestyles,” said Milankovic.
“SUVs and utes have a cool factor to it. It’s marketed towards people who want freedom, fun, and exploration….people want to identify with that fun and adventurous self even if they may just use the SUV to go pick up their kids from school,” he continued.
Two decades ago, passenger cars accounted for over 70 per cent of cars sold in Australia. Today, the ratio has come down to accommodate AussiesÂ’ growing taste for SUVs and utes.
Reports from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries show that utes, vans, and SUVs sold just 362 units less than passenger cars in January 2013.
“These bigger cars that are coming into vogue also tend to be very versatile. Families tend to like them because the bigger size makes them feel that their kids are safer inside, and they can also pack more into the cars for road or camping trips,” said Milankovic.
New levels of fuel efficiency also make SUVs and utes much more attractive than they were in years past.
The mining boom is also partly the driving force behind the growing preference for SUVs.
